Šibenik sits at the mouth of the Krka, where a narrow channel meets a scatter of islands and, further out, the way toward the Kornati and the open sea. The old town and the cathedral are inland of that channel. The national park is up the river, at Skradin and beyond. For a small boat these are three different places: the channel, the islands, and the river. Mixing them up is how a calm plan becomes a restricted one. The Kornati guide covers the archipelago to the west. Park rules for the river are in the park fees guide.
St Anthony’s channel is the narrow entrance from the sea to the city. Beyond it the bay opens toward Zlarin, Prvić, Kaprije and Žirje, each a step further out. Žirje is the outer one, with open water on its far side. Upstream, the Krka leads to Skradin. Private boats can reach Skradin. The park restricts navigation further up the river. That limit is the park’s rule, not a guess: check it on the park’s site before you plan to go beyond Skradin. This page does not list prices or pretend to be the by-law.
Bura. The hills around Šibenik funnel a north-easterly. The channel and the bay can be gusty in a Bura even when the old town feels shut in. The outer islands feel the wind with less warning and more sea. Read the Bura guide before you treat the cathedral square as a wind report.
Maestral. The summer afternoon north-westerly fills the approaches and the gaps between the islands. Mornings are the time to go out. The Maestral guide is the daily pattern.
Jugo. A south-easterly puts swell on the outer islands, especially Žirje, and makes south-facing coves uncomfortable. Inside the channel the sea is smaller. If the Jugo is strong, the outer islands are the wrong destination. See the Jugo guide.
Thunderstorms. Summer storms come off the land quickly. The river and the narrow channel are not places to be stuck without a plan.
Choose the near islands when the wind is due to rise, and Žirje only when the whole day stays moderate. The river is a sheltered outing in many winds and a restricted one above Skradin. If DHMZ has a wind warning, the channel will not be exempt. Leave time to come back down before a forecast strengthening, because the entrance is not a place you want to meet a gust on the beam in a queue of boats.
Set Šibenik or Skradin on the live board and read the verdict for your boat, with gusts shown beside the mean. The official forecast is DHMZ.
Check today’s go/no-go for your boat
These guides describe typical patterns, not today’s weather. Navigate Boats is a planning aid, not a navigation tool: before you go, check the official marine forecast and warnings from DHMZ (Croatia), ARSO (Slovenia) or the Montenegrin hydrometeorological service, and use your own judgement.
