Pula sits near the southern tip of Istria. To the north-west lie the Brijuni Islands and the long west coast towards Rovinj. To the south is the Premantura peninsula and Cape Kamenjak, and to the east the open Kvarner Gulf towards Cres and Lošinj. The west coast is relatively sheltered and low. The south and east are much more exposed, and the weather there deserves care.
Bura. The Kvarner, east of Istria, is one of the windiest parts of the Adriatic in a Bura. Gusts come down from the mountains behind Rijeka and across the gulf, raising a steep sea between Istria and the islands. On Istria’s west coast the Bura blows off the land, so the sea can look calm near the shore while the gusts push boats away from it.
Jugo. A south-easterly sends a big sea into the Kvarner and round the southern tip of Istria. Cape Kamenjak and the waters off Premantura are exposed, and the sea there can be confused where waves wrap round the point. Bays open to the south, including parts of Medulin Bay, become uncomfortable.
Maestral. On fine summer days a north-westerly sea breeze blows along the west coast in the afternoon. It is usually moderate, but it builds a chop against the coast and in the passage by the Brijuni.
Thunderstorms. Summer storms can move out from the land in the afternoon, sometimes followed by a sudden wind shift.
For small boats, the west coast towards Fažana and the Brijuni channel and the bays of Medulin are the friendliest options in settled weather. On a Bura day the west coast gives the most shelter from waves, but watch the offshore gusts. On a Jugo day avoid the cape and the Kvarner side altogether.
From Fažana the water along the Brijuni channel is short and usually calm in the morning, with the park rules to keep in mind. From Medulin and Pomer the bays and islets of Medulin Bay suit an easy day, and the coves near Premantura reward a settled one. Along the west coast, the run north towards Rovinj passes low, sheltered shores with many small bays. The Kvarner side of Istria, towards Rabac, is steeper and more exposed and belongs to calm days only.
Set Pula, Rovinj or Medulin as your base and the board shows the verdict for your boat with the named wind, the gusts and the wave height through the day. Check the official DHMZ marine forecast and warnings for the northern Adriatic too.

These guides describe typical patterns, not today’s weather. Navigate Boats is a planning aid, not a navigation tool: before you go, check the official marine forecast and warnings from DHMZ (Croatia), ARSO (Slovenia) or the Montenegrin hydrometeorological service, and use your own judgement.
