Korčula: boating weather and what to watch

A Navigate Boats guide · Updated 4 November 2026

Korčula lies between the Pelješac peninsula and the outer islands, west of Dubrovnik and east of Hvar. Korčula town faces Orebić across a channel that is busy, scenic and very much a wind funnel. The south coast of the island faces more open water. Lastovo is a further, more exposed hop to the south. For a small boat the channel is the everyday water, and the south coast is the water you choose only when the wind agrees. The Dubrovnik guide covers the coast to the east. Lastovo’s park rules are in the park fees guide.

How the island sits

The Pelješac channel runs along the north side. It is the way east and west, and the way the afternoon breeze and a Jugo both travel. The south coast has fewer harbours and more exposure. West of Korčula the islands step toward Hvar. South, Lastovo is out on its own. Ferries cross the channel and call at the town. The Pelješac bridge carries the road. It does not make the channel a lake.

Local weather patterns

Maestral. In summer the north-westerly fills the channel in the afternoon and can be fresh between Korčula town and Orebić. The morning is the time to pass that narrows or to cross to the west. See the Maestral guide.

Jugo. A south-easterly runs up the channel and onto the south coast. The town’s waterfront can be uneasy, and a passage toward Lastovo is open sea with swell. The sea remains after the wind eases. Read the Jugo guide.

Bura. A north-easterly reaches this far south in gusts off the mainland and the peninsula. It is less the daily wind than the Jugo, and it is not harmless in the channel. The Bura guide describes the clear-sky version.

Thunderstorms. Afternoon storms off the peninsula cross the channel quickly. Have the day’s harbour already in mind.

What to watch on the water

Planning a day

Use the west bays and the inner channel for the ordinary small-boat day. Pass the town narrows early. Leave Lastovo and the south coast for a forecast that stays moderate, with a small sea on the return as well as the way out. If the board is already cautious for your boat in Korčula town, the channel will not improve it.

How Navigate Boats helps

Set Korčula or Orebić on the live board. The named wind, the gusts and the wave height are the verdict. Confirm it with DHMZ.

Check today’s go/no-go for your boat

These guides describe typical patterns, not today’s weather. Navigate Boats is a planning aid, not a navigation tool: before you go, check the official marine forecast and warnings from DHMZ (Croatia), ARSO (Slovenia) or the Montenegrin hydrometeorological service, and use your own judgement.
