Biograd and Murter: boating weather and what to watch

A Navigate Boats guide · Updated 4 November 2026

Biograd na Moru and Murter are the two mainland-side bases people use when the Kornati are the point of the week. Biograd sits on the Pašman channel, with the island of Pašman close offshore. Murter is on the island of the same name, joined to the mainland by a bridge, and it is the usual near start for the park. Both are also perfectly good places for a short day that never enters the park at all. The Kornati guide is about the archipelago. This page is about the water you are in before you get there. The Zadar guide covers the channel further north.

How the water is arranged

The Pašman channel is narrow and in places shallow, with marked routes that matter. East of Murter the islands begin at once: the inner Kornati look close, and the outer islands are a longer day. Betina and the Murter waterfront face that archipelago. Biograd faces Pašman, with Tkon across the channel and a scatter of smaller islands. None of this is open ocean, until you leave the inner islands behind.

Local weather patterns

Maestral. The summer north-westerly blows along the channel in the afternoon and through the gaps toward the Kornati. A departure that felt easy at nine can be a wet return at four. Do the open part of the day first. The Maestral guide describes that rhythm.

Bura. Velebit is further north, so the Bura here is usually less violent than in the Velebit channel, and it is still a real wind. Gusts cross from the mainland onto the north-east sides of the islands, and the short sea in the gaps is what a small boat feels. A DHMZ warning for the region applies here too. See the Bura guide.

Jugo. The outer islands take the swell. Inside the channel the sea is smaller, and bays open to the south-east still get uncomfortable. If the forecast is a strong Jugo, stay among the inner islands or stay in port. The Jugo guide explains the sea that outlasts the wind.

Thunderstorms. Summer storms build over the land and move out over the islands in the afternoon. The archipelago is a poor place to be when the only shelter is a long way upwind.

What to watch on the water

Planning a day

A kind day is an early start, the exposed gap in the calm, and a turn for home before the afternoon wind is at its strongest. If you do not need the park, the Pašman channel and the islands immediately off Murter are the better small-boat plan whenever the outer forecast is doubtful. The bridge at Murter means the island is not a sea passage from the mainland road, but the water around it is still the sea.

How Navigate Boats helps

Set Biograd or Murter on the live board. For bases near the park the page adds a note on the park itself. The verdict still follows your boat, the gusts and the waves, and it will not outrank a DHMZ wind warning. Read DHMZ as well.

Check today’s go/no-go for your boat

These guides describe typical patterns, not today’s weather. Navigate Boats is a planning aid, not a navigation tool: before you go, check the official marine forecast and warnings from DHMZ (Croatia), ARSO (Slovenia) or the Montenegrin hydrometeorological service, and use your own judgement.
